SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS) -- Hundreds more California National Guardsmen are being called up in President Bush's surge in Iraq.
This news comes as a Congressional report show National Guard units are so depleted they may not be able to respond to domestic emergencies.
Not only have deployments shrunk unit availability, they are impacting recruiting efforts as well. The Commission on the National Guard and Reserves says the current rate of deployment is not sustainable.
"These problems have been with us for a long time and they're enhanced by the nature of the threat that we face today," said committee chair Retired Marine Corps General Arnold Punaro. "Number two, there's no magic wand of pixie dust that you can sprinkle on it and solve it overnight."
Meanwhile, the Pentagon is calling up hundreds of California Guardsmen, some of whom could be on their second or even third tour. So far, more than 6,000 California Guardsmen have served in Iraq.
