SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Zoo officials say they have to cut $700,000 because of legal fees, revenue lost while the zoo was closed after the tiger attack on a visitor, and during a stretch of bad weather earlier this year. But officials say the cutbacks will not impact the animals.
The $700,000 in cuts is an estimate; the zoo is undergoing an audit that should give it some exact numbers. Officials won't hint at what exactly may be cut, but says over two-thirds of the budget is spent on salaries for its 225 full and part-time workers.
The zoo is expected to present a balanced budget to the Recreation and Park Commission on August 21st, but before that, they face a second hearing this Thursday on proposed legislation by Supervisor Chris Daly to turn the zoo into a rescue sanctuary. Such a move would prompt the loss of accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
