Feral Cats Pose Risk to San Jose's Native Owl Population

SAN JOSE (KCBS / CBS 5)  -- Animal rescue groups are rushing to adopt as many cats as possible from a feral colony centered around an abandoned San Jose horse barn that is dangerously close to a habitat for burrowing owls.

The owls are dependent on conservation programs to maintain their numbers, and city officials said they would euthanize the remaining cats should they pose a threat to the birds when the city resumes control of the property in October.

For years, people have left unwanted house cats at the barn near Highway 237 and 880 in San Jose, and the colony now numbers about 60.

The structure is less than 1,600 feet from a field where a once healthy population of burrowing owls has been reduced to just six.
