SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- Over-crowding on Caltrain means more and more bicycle commuters are getting bumped off their train on the way to work. And the transit agency is offering few options to help cyclists.
”One time I tried to board in San Francisco, and there were three other cyclists, and I had my full sized bike. They just looked at me and said, ‘can’t take you,’ which puts an extra hour onto my commute,” said one cyclist.
Cyclists say that one easy solution would be to add more bike cars, or create extra storage space for bikes. But Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn says that adding rail cars is a lengthy process, which takes years.
”I can tell you that we are getting eight passenger cars that will go into service in October, so that will relieve some of the crowding, not just for bike riders, but for all train riders,” said Dunn.
Officials are also considering offering more bike lockers at train stations, or charging a fee to bike riders during peak hours.
