Berkeley, Calif. (KCBS) -- A judge is expected make a permanent preliminary ruling allowing the University of California to build a student athletic training center at a grove of oak trees outside Memorial Stadium. However, critics of the project are saying that they will appeal, which could delay construction for months.
Yet as the debate continues to linger on, the fall semester has begun and so has the football season with the first game set for Saturday. Currently the oak trees are still occupied by some remaining tree sitters which the university has fenced off to prevent more supplies and other tree sitters from moving in. Under ordinary circumstances, it would make it difficult for thousands of fans getting in and out of the stadium for the game. University spokesman Dan Mogulof says adjustments have been made.
“We have a plan in place that’s going to put more gates around the stadium, wider gates around the stadium, and additional points of access. And we really expect the pedestrian flow is going to be as easy as its ever been and we’re looking forward to a fantastic game.”
Mogulof adds that the tree sitters have never harassed football fans. In addition, the university is asking for both visitors and tree sitters to not engage on another.
