Police Ask Community for Help to Find City Councilman's Killer

Fairfield, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Fairfield police are asking members of the community to help find those responsible for the murder of Matt Garcia, a 22-year-old city councilman who was shot in the back of the head while visiting a friend Monday night.

“Obviously this is a case that hits home for us,” said Fairfield Police Corporal Catherine Skerrit. “…there’s lots of information to follow-up on, but with any investigation it doesn’t happen over night.”

According to Skerrit, police and detectives have been working overtime on this case and hope to have some answers soon.

She says that no piece of information is considered too small and that anyone who may have seen or heard anything should call police.

Garcia had just stepped out of his car outside a friend's home Monday night when a gunman got out of a car and fired several shots from a distance of about 50 yards.

Police say a single bullet from a small caliber handgun or rifle struck Garcia in the back of the head.

He was hospitalized at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek where he was pronounced brain dead Monday night.

Following his wishes, Garcia’s family kept him on life support through Wednesday afternoon in order to donate his organs. Garcia family spokesman Ron Marlette said the organ donation team at the John Muir Medical Center began processing Garcia's heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and pancreas. A grandmother has already requested a kidney for her 25-year-old grandson, Marlette said.

A prayer service for Garcia and his family is set for 7:00 Wednesday night at Parkway Community Church in Fairfield.
