SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- Teachers in San Jose stepped out of the classrooms Friday morning to protest the on-going budget impasse in Sacramento that has squeezed funding for schools.
The teachers handed out flyers to parents in the Franklin McKinley School District letting them know that a quarter of state funding for schools has been held up because the state legislature has yet to pass a budget. The teachers are giving lawmakers an F for effort to get a spending plan in place.
Similar protests were planned at schools up and down the state.
KCBS' Matt Bigler reports
The budget is more than 60 days overdue. And though the state made its payroll last month, officials say it will not be able to pay state workers this month. The fight in Sacramento is over how deeply to cut spending and whether the state should raise taxes to generate revenue.
