Grant Will Help Local Alternative Fuel Effort

BiodieselSAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS)  -- With gasoline prices topping $3 per gallon, City College of San Francisco has been awarded a timely federal grant to develop cheaper and cleaner alternative fuel technology.

It doesn't take much to solicit strong reaction to soaring prices at the pump.

"Insane," described Chris Kendrick. "I've got a 30-gallon gas tank and I'm filling that thing up constantly."

Kendrick is a mechanic at the Evans Campus of City College of SF. He's dropped a diesel engine in a classic 1974 El Camino Super Sport that will run on biodegradable vegetable oil. It's cheap, clean, doesn't contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and is a real muscle car.

"We want quick take-off, which is an issue with diesel," he said. "We're going to get some quick take-off."

City College was just awarded a $200,000 grant to develop biodiesel technology.

Chancellor Philip Day believes it will help reduce emissions that increase asthma rates, heart disease and other problems in the community.

"Every one of us at a both personal, professional and institutional level have really got to do more if we are going to make a significant contribution to sustain our environment," he said.
