New Home for Bay Area's Youth Radio

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS)  -- A media training group for economically disadvantaged young people is now broadcasting from its new home in downtown Oakland.

Youth Radio began its humble beginnings in Berkeley 17 years ago as a free after-school education in broadcasting. The idea was to give poor kids a future in radio. The organization has now branched out into video and the Web.

Youth Radio purchased its new home at 1707 Broadway two years ago. Its grand opening was held this past weekend.

ListenKCBS’ Henry Mulak Reports

Some 1,300 teenagers from 14 to 18 pass through Youth Radio’s doors, getting valuable training in the broadcast industry. Their reports can be heard on the internet and on a variety of radio stations including KCBS.
