San Francisco Welcomes Mega-Cruise Ship to Drydock

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and other city officials officially welcomed the Star Princess to the city's newly expanded drydock at Pier 70.

The mega-cruise ship will undergo around-the-clock mechanical, navigational and interior upgrades during its 13 day stay. The ship is 952 feet long, 118 feet wide, 109,000 tons, and holds 1,200 crew members and as many as 3,100 passengers.

"Having this beautiful ship grace our waterfront reminds us of San Francisco's maritime roots and enhances our position as a destination city," said Newsom.

"Pier 70 is the historical heart of the Port's working waterfront, which continues to provide high-paying, skilled jobs that San Francisco needs," said Supervisor Sophie Maxwell who represents the Bayview District.

Last year, the Port of San Francisco, Princess Cruises which owns the Star Princess, and the shipyard operator - BAE Systems San Francisco - agreed to undertake a major overhaul of Pier 70's drydock, making it the only commercial facility on the west coast able to accommodate post-Panamax ships, that is, ships too large to transit the Panama Canal.
