Obama Breaks Fundraising Record

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- First came the record crowd of 100,000 people in St. Louis, then an endorsement from Colin Powell, and now a record-shattering month of fundraising. It was a remarkable weekend for Barack Obama, but John McCain isn't about to give up just yet.

In the 2000 election, George W. Bush became the first presidential candidate ever to raise $100 million for his entire campaign.

Barack Obama just raised 150 million in the month of September alone. Obama's prodigious fundraising, outside the public financing system, bothered John McCain, on Fox News Sunday.

"That has unleashed now, in presidential campaigns, a new flood of spending that will then cause a scandal, and then we will fix it again," said McCain.

He says he wonders where all that money is really coming from. Obama campaign manager David Plouffe says it's coming from an astounding three million individual donors, giving an average of $86 each.

"The two groups that have given us the most contributions are retirees and students, which shows how Baracks call for change has really spanned the generations," said Plouffe. But Steve Chagarris, director of political coverage for CBS News, says Obama's huge financial advantage doesn't assure victory.

"There's no proof that more money equals more votes, that's not always a guarantee. There have been plenty of campaigns, presidential or not, where the people with the most money have not won," said Chagarris.

Meanwhile, the New York Times has obtained copies of the candidates medical records, and they are outlining what's been released and asks questions about what hasn't.
