Blu-Ray Disc Popularity Waning

This holiday shopping season may be a blue one, at least for retailers of Blu-Ray disk drives. With the drives still selling for $250 or more, the next-gen technology is a luxury that many consumers may not be able to afford.

Last week, Apple CEO Steve Jobs was asked why the new line of Apple laptops does not include the technology.

”Blu-Ray is just a bag of hurt,” said Jobs. “And I don’t mean from the consumer point of view because it’s great to watch Blu-Ray movies, but the licensing of the technology is so complex.”

He adds that it’s also pretty expensive, and the technology hasn’t really taken off. But KCBS Technology Analyst Larry Magid says that may never happen if consumers continue to get their HD movies off of the Internet.

”Apple wants you to go to iTunes and rent or buy movies online instead,” said Magid.

The Blu-Ray Disc Association counters that experts also predicted the demise of the original DVDs when they first went on sale.
