Prop K: Sex Workers vs. City Officials

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- San Francisco's reputation as a tolerant city will be put to the test on Election Day next Tuesday, as a measure to decriminalize the world’s oldest profession is drawing strong support and opposition.
Listen  KCBS’ George Harris Reports

"This is a slavery camp, this is a slavery brothel as far as I'm concerned," said Norma Hotaling, standing in front of a shuttered massage parlor in the city's Tenderloin District. She is dedicated to helping prostitutes leave the profession.

Hotaling joined the mayor, district attorney and others speaking in opposition to Proposition K, claiming the measure to decriminalize prostitution is a ploy to shift attention away from pimps and those who profit from human trafficking.

"When you say yes to Proposition K you're going to have girls in the Midwest recruited by slave owners and brought to San Francisco," said Hotaling.

But Rachel West, who supports Prop K says the proposal will protect prostitutes from assault and rape and make it easier to report crime without fear of arrest.

"Why would we support slavery? It's just another scare tactic, and they're definitely on the run, they're on the defensive," said West.
