Santa Clara 49ers Stadium Could Cause Electricity Bill Spike
|
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KCBS) -- The average Santa Clara homeowner would pay about $86 a year more for electricity if the city taps its municipally-owned utility’s cash reserves to build a new stadium for the San Francisco 49ers.
Officials at Silicon Valley Power made the projections at the request of Santa Clara City Council members. SVP ratepayers will see a three percent increase in the next few years whether a new stadium is built or not, according to SVP Assistant Director John Roukema. He added that if the stadium is partially financed with utility cash, ratepayers will see increases of 7 percent at the $50 million level and 16 percent at the $200 million level.
The average Santa Clara homeowner pays approximately $45 a month on the electricity bill, Roukema said. A 16 percent increase translates to approximately $86 a year.
Many Santa Clara residents are reacting positively to the idea of financing a 49ers stadium with utility funds, despite the higher rates.
