PALO ALTO, Calif. (KCBS) -- A resolution condemning racial profiling goes before the Palo Alto City Council Monday evening. This comes even after the city's police chief apologized for comments she made just over a week ago.
KCBS’ Ron Naso Reports
The controversy sparked a weekend march and rally in front of Palo City Hall.
"We just think it's time that we stopped this," said Goro Mitchell, who was one of those who took part in the protest. "We think it's a culture here in the city's police department to harass people of color, specifically men of color."
The protest comes after Police Chief Lynne Johnsons' comments last week that were interpreted by some as directing police to conduct racial profiling. The police chief has apologized and said her comments have been misconstrued. City Councilwoman Yoriko Kishimoto says the council has to send out a big message stating there is zero tolerance for racial profiling in Palo Alto.
"Obviously the challenge is going to be how we implement it. There is training that we can do, and we do have a police auditor in place," said Kishimoto.
The city already has a policy against racial profiling.
Police Chief Johnson made her comments during a community meeting to address a string of robberies in the city, in which the suspects have been described as black.
