LIVERMORE, Calif. -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger continued to push for a temporary sales tax increase Monday to help close the states' budget gap despite opposition from legislators his own party.
Republicans are staunchly opposed to the Governor's three year 1.5% tax bump, which could boost sales tax to more than 10% in some municipalities, and would raise $4.7 billion.
Gov. Schwarzenegger would have to pursuade lame duck legislators to go along with the increase to have it passe.
"You're all getting paid still so let's keep working," Schwarzenegger said during a speech at Lawrence Livermore Lab. "I hope they will be responsible because this is not an ordinary budget negotiation. This is a crisis we're in."
The state legislature has until the end of the month to act. A new class of legislators will be sworn in Dec. 1.
