SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Fewer students could be admitted to the University of California system because of cuts proposed by the governor to balance the state budget.
The UC system could lose as much as $65 million in mid-year cuts at a time when it is already underfunded by $1 billion, said UC President Mark Yudof.
KCBS' Chris Filippi reports
“We are now 10,000 students over what the legislature has funded us for,” Yudof told an audience at San Francisco’s Commonwealth Club on Monday.
If Gov. Schwarzenegger’s cuts are approved, spending the University of California budget will have been reduced by $113 million this year.
The California State University System has already cut 10,000 spots for next year’s incoming class. Yudof said the UC Board of Regents would also have to at least consider an enollment cap when it meets on Tuesday.
