OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS/AP) -- A memorial is going up in Oakland to remember the victims of the Jonestown massacre.
It was 30 years ago today that more than 900 people were led by the Reverend Jim Jones into a murder and suicide ritual of epic proportions.
The partially constructed memorial was unveiled today in Oakland's Evergreen Cemetery, where more than 400 unclaimed bodies from the mass killing lie.
Two of the walls of a seven-panel granite memorial have been completed. The panels will include all the names of the dead with the exception of Jones.
KCBS' Doug Sovern Reports
The killing began during a fact-finding mission by U.S. Rep. Leo Ryan to a remote commune built by Jones in the jungles of Guyana.
Hundreds of people died at the California-based People's Temple commune later that day, most from cyanide poisoning.
