FREMONT, Calif. (KCBS) -- In another sign of the faltering economy, Toyota announced it would cut one shift of pickup truck production at its New United Motor Manufacturing plant in Fremont.
The second-shift production of the Toyota Tacoma will end January 5, according to a company spokesman. It is also stopping production for both shifts for two days in December.
There are currently no plans for layoffs. Instead, workers will be assigned other work, Toyota said.

NUMMI has about 4,800 employees, most of whom are represented by the United Auto Workers union. Officials at UAW Local 2244 say they were told the second shift production line will resume when the economy improves, but they realize nothing is guaranteed.
Meanwhile, Tesla Motors in San Carlos announced it would delay production of its all electric sedan.
