SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- The city of San Jose has agreed to cut back on the number of people arrested for public drunkenness.
The city council made that decision Tuesday night after hundreds of residents turned out to protest the police department's aggressive policy.
The council voted to form a commission to study the current practice of arresting thousands of people for public drunkenness each year.
A study by the Mercury News found that San Jose police arrested 4,661 people for being drunk in public last year, 57 percent of them Hispanics.
