MARTINEZ, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Investigators suspect the vehicle responsible for a hit-and-run crash on Highway 4 that killed a bicyclist is a Chevy Silverado pick-up truck probably located in Port Costa or Crockett.

Witnesses have provided several good tips about the vehicle, which California Highway Patrol Officer Scott Yox said was traveling in the direction of those two communities.

Pieces of the truck recovered by the CHP suggest the vehicle’s front end was probably damaged when Mark Pendleton was hit on McEwen Road around sometime between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday, Yox said.

“At bare minimum you’re looking at felony hit-and-run because there was death to another,” he told KCBS reporter Dave Padilla, adding that manslaughter charges were also possible.

On Tuesday, as Yox and others handed out leaflets about the accident to motorists and cyclists, Pendleton’s grief-stricken son Paul urged anyone with information to come forward.

“Someone hit my dad and left him for dead on the side of the road,” said the younger man said.

Pendleton was in the saddle three to five times a week and biked the Crockett loop sometimes more than once a day.
