SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- There's a new guide to the city of San Francisco, but it's “not for tourists.”
Jane Pirone is the founder and publisher of Not For Tourists, a guide which marries mapping and atlases with practical tips and resources for the people who live in different neighborhoods.
“We don’t really like the idea of tourists because it kind of means you’re coming in and using a place very superficially and you’re not getting to know it. So this works really well as a guide for someone who’s visiting a neighborhood and wants to get to know it really well.”
Pirone says the guide lists everyday utilities like post offices and gas stations, as well as highlighting areas that aren't unique to a neighborhood. She says transplant cities like San Francisco are constantly changing, and so the Not For Tourists guides are updated every year.
The contributors are people who live and work in the cities they're writing about -- including a cab driver who writes about transportation options. Pirone says her company is hoping to capitalize on the down economy, as more people opt for “staycations” and need to find new excursions in their hometowns.
