SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- San Jose isn’t as safe as it used to be.
An analysis of last year’s FBI crime stats finds that San Jose ranks behind Honolulu, New York, and El Paso for the title of “Safest Big City in America.”

Some residents say they aren’t surprised, because it seems like there’s been a recent increase in gang activity.
”It’s not as safe as it used to be in San Jose,” said one man. “Years ago you could leave your door open in San Jose, and go to the grocery store. Now if you leave your door open you won’t have a house to come back to. They’ll take the whole house, and the dog.”
But city leaders say gang activity is actually down from its peak in September of last year. And Councilman Sam Liccardo notes that violent crimes are still relatively low in San Jose.
”When it comes to sexual assaults, murders, crimes of a very violent and predatory nature, San Jose is clearly a very safe city relative to its peers,” said Liccardo.
Last July the city added 25 new police officers to the force.
