SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/AP) -- Opponents of the initiative that banned same sex marriage in California are encouraging people to “call in gay” from work on Wednesday to protest the passage of Proposition 8.
Organizers of the “Day Without a Gay” are urging supporters of gay rights to perform volunteer work on Dec. 10 instead, and to refrain from spending money.
Some gay business owners say they simply cannot afford to shut down for one day during the Christmas retail season because of the slow economy.
A spokesman for the organization Join the Impact said a 6 p.m. rally at the 24th and Mission BART station is being planned for those who do not have the option of calling in sick. It will be followed by a march to the intersection of Market Street and Octavia.
