SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/AP) -- Supporters of same-sex marriage hope Wednesday’s “Day Without a Gay” protest against Proposition 8 demonstrates the size and influence of the gay and lesbian community.
Organizers have encouraged those can skip work to volunteer instead, as well as to refrain from spending money.
KCBS' Holly Quan reports
Support for the protest, modeled after a 2006 immigrant rights march dubbed “Day Without a Mexican” does not have uniform support among Bay Area lesbians and gay men.
KCBS reporter Holly Quan caught up with baristas working the early shift at coffee shops in the Castro District who said many of their friends were planning to show up at work despite their opposition to the ballot initiative that reversed this year's state Supreme Court decision allowing gay marriage.
Events are planned all over the state. In San Francisco, the day culminates in a Mission District rally and march at 6 p.m.
