BERKELEY, Calif. (KCBS)  -- Authorities rushing to a Berkeley park this morning to put out a fire ended up discovering a dead body.

At about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday workers driving to work along 80 through Berkeley reported an explosion, and seeing what they thought was a garbage can on fire along the frontage road between Gilman and University.

When firefighters arrived they discovered that it was a body set ablaze near the entrance to a dog walking trail at the East Shore Regional Park.

”The body has been totally burned, so I can’t tell you anything at the moment about what he’s wearing. I can’t even identify a race at this time,” said Park Police Sergeant Tyrone Davis.

One witness says that the body was in a plastic garbage can that melted away revealing the victim, who looked like he was bound with rope.

Investigators are scouring the park looking for any nearby homeless encampments to see if anyone saw, or heard anything.
