SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCBS) -- California's top prosecutor is trying to overturn new rules the Bush administration has applied to the nation's Endangered Species Act. Attorney General Jerry Brown has filed a lawsuit in federal court aimed at blocking the administration's changes to the legislation.
KCBS’ Doug Sovern Reports
Over the summer the Interior and Commerce departments proposed eliminating the input of independent government scientists in some endangered species reviews. The rules were made final earlier this month.
The changes allow federal agencies to permit mining, logging, and other commercial activities on federal land without obtaining a review from federal wildlife biologists.
The attorney General's office released a statement Tuesday calling the proposals an audacious attempt to gut provisions of the act that could threaten endangered species and their habitat.
The lawsuit was filed Thursday.
