San Francisco Holocaust Memorial Defaced

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Police are increasing patrols around the city’s Holocaust Memorial after two incidents of vandalism in December.

The graffiti has been removed, but the footprint remains where red had been painted onto the memorial wall outside the Legion of Honor museum.

Listen  KCBS' Doug Sovern reports

A few weeks before, city workers diligently removed swastikas from the artwork, a figure peering through barbed wire before a pile of bodies on the ground behind him.

Police do not know if the vandalism was motivated by Israeli’s air strikes against Hamas militants in Gaza this week, or by local protests about them.

KCBS reporter Doug Sovern says the vandalism has shaken some Jews, concerned about the possibility of a rise in anti-Semitism and well-meaning people reacting the wrong way to renewed hostilities between Israel and the Palestinians.

Police have increased patrols in the area around the memorial and the museum. They describe the suspect as a man in his 20s who is six feet, wears a white bandana and carries a black bike messenger bag.
