DUI Arrests Up New Year's Eve

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)  -- Drunken driving arrests were up, but otherwise police throughout the Bay Area are reporting it was a mostly quiet New Year's Eve.

The California Highway Patrol says 84 drivers were arrested in the Bay Area for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs between 6 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday

That's up from 41 during the same time last year.

There were also two fatal crashes, compared to none during the same period last year.

In Santa Cruz, there were some concerns that things in downtown might become unruly with more than 10,000 people expected to hit the streets on New Year's Eve.

But Santa Cruz police made only ten arrests, mostly for minor infractions.
