SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- San Jose is launching a crackdown on thieves who steal from recycle bins and exchange aluminum cans and plastic bottles for cash at recycling facilities.
The governor signed a bill into law last year requiring recycling facilities to check for identification from those turning in more than $50 of recyclables, and to issue checks to them instead of cash. The legislation went into effect Jan. 1
San Jose officials are making it clear they want to stop scavengers from siphoning cans and bottles from collection companies. They warn those who are caught doing it will be subject to a fine.
