Amber Alert Issued for San Jose Girl

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS)  -- SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) - Police issued an Amber Alert after 8-year-old Kayla Montez was taken from Holly Oak Elementary School in San Jose by someone who wasn't authorized to pick her up.

It was quickly determined that the man was the boyfriend of the girl's mother.

Family members were able to make contact with the man, identified by authorities as Mark Porter, 24. "He said 'hey, I'm just getting some ice cream' and then he said 'hey, I'm just going to go get some breakfast' and then 'hey, I'm going to go to the mall and get her a pair of shoes,' " explained San Jose Police Department Sgt. Mike Sullivan. "Well, the 'heys' weren't working for us, so we continued to try to triangulate him and we finally got him in an area where we thought he might be by East Ridge, and somehow he got out towards the west side of town... and dropped her off at a Weinerschnitzel with his mother."

Porter's mother immediately called police after picking up the girl from her son, in the parking lot of the fast food restaurant.

Meanwhile, the girl's school is being given high marks by authorities for acting quickly. "The school saw the red flag. They saw that she was in transition from one classroom to another, she didn't show up," said Sullivan. "A known person, now the suspect, contacted her. When she didn't get to school, they immediately called us, got us pictures, got us addresses of potential other suspects and related family members, so it was fantastic."
