SF Police Warn of Lunar New Year Crime Spike

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- Police, parole agents, and crime prevention officers are warning merchants in San Francisco's Richmond District to be on the lookout for extortionists, robbers and burglars, who may prey on those stocking the shelves for Lunar New Year.
Listen  KCBS’ Bob Melrose Reports

This outreach effort in some cases, seems to work, as extortion attempts on businesses by gang members used to number in the dozens each year, and now they’re down to ten.

David Chan of San Francisco Safety Awareness for Everyone, or “SAFE,” says more merchants are coming forward. ”Throughout the year, due to the efforts of SAFE and the SFPD crimes have dramatically and significantly reduced to only ten each year,” said Chan.

However, burglaries and robberies still spike each time this year as merchants do more business for the Lunar New Year.
