SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is threatening to take action unless Muni does a better job of collecting cable car fares.
Operators of the city's most popular tourist attractions failed to collect fares 40 percent of the time, amounting to $13 million of lost revenue each year, according to a city controller's audit.
"I'm getting ready to come forward with a charter amendment that's going to hold MTA (Municipal Transportation Agency) staff, MTA supervisors and the MTA Commission accountable," said Board President Aaron Peskin. "If they can't clean it up, then let's get it back to the Board of Supervisors because we will."
The controller's office noted that crowding and the time of day could have an effect on whether operators collect the $5 fares.
