WASHINGTON D.C. (KCBS) -- Several California Republicans, locked in tight congressional races, are hoping a visit by Vice-President Dick Cheney will bring in some much needed campaign contributions.
Cheney is campaigning in California today on behalf of Tracy Congressman Richard Pombo, Rocklin's John Doolittle and tomorrow he will be in southern California to campaign for Brian Bilbray.
KCBS Political Analyst and San Francisco Chronicle Washington D.C. Bureau Chief Marc Sandalow notes that despite recent low poll numbers from the White House, a high ranking name from the Bush administration can still bring in campaign dollars.
"The vice-president, is still a draw. The administration's approval rating, the president's approval rating may only stand at 30-percent but those 30-percent, certainly some of them are willing to contribute and no matter how unpopular a president's team might be, they always have the ability to raise money and I'm sure that Doolittle, Pombo and Billbray appreciate what the vice-president can raise," Sandalow said.
Pombo is being challenged by Congressman Peter McCloskey and Doolittle faces tough criticism for his association with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
After appearances today for Pombo and Doolittle, Cheney heads to San Diego for an appearance to bolster the efforts of Billbray who is involved in a special election run-off with Francine Busby a Democrat.
