SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Why us? That’s the question hundreds of badminton players are asking after the city’s Recreation and Parks Department would have to fork over $40 if they want to play on San Francisco courts.
The badminton business at the Sunset Recreation Center evaporated once the fee took effect. No one wanted to pay $4 for a 50-minute session, or be forced to buy 10 sessions at a time.
KCBS' Barbara Taylor reports
“To have this gym stand idle is no way to raise our resources,” said Ed Leong, one of 200 badminton players who signed a petition asking the city to stop charging for their game.
Leong is in his 80s and said he had been playing at the Sunset Rec Center for close to 30 years. He watched the fee situation become so complicated that the badminton program was simply ended.
Basketball, volleyball and tennis courts around the city are still free for now. Even as Supervisor Carmen Chu’s office looks into the many complaints its logged about the badminton fees, park officials are working up charges for the other courts.
