SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- New life is being breathed into prom dresses and accessories for girls who want to attend their high school prom but would otherwise not be able to afford it.
For the past seven years, the Princess Project has collected thousands of used, but in excellent condition, dresses and given them away to girls in need in San Francisco, Silicon Valley and the East Bay.
“It’s one of those things that’s really hard to put into words. It’s an opportunity for [the girls] to feel that there’s a community and people supporting them to be able to let them go to something that means a lot somebody when their 16 or 17-years-old,” said Quinn Donnelley, secretary for the Princess Project.
KCBS’ Margie Shafer reports
Since it’s beginning in 2002, the project has served more than 9,000 girls. This week, the project hosted it’s annual Community Dress and Accessory Drive and plans to help at least 3,000 girls in need this year. Donnelley says it’s easy for people to get involved because everyone has a nice dress that could be reused.
“There’s just that need that’s there and it’s a great way to connect resources that are out there because everyone has a prom dress or a bride’s maid’s dress… and that can go to a prom again,” said Donnelley.
Dress sizes range from 0 to 32 plus. For more information on the project, visit their website at www.princessproject.org/princess.
