South Bay Water Rationing Likely

SAN JOSE (KCBS)  -- Despite the recent storms, officials at the Santa Clara Valley Water District said mandatory conservations will likely be imposed later this year.

The federal government will supply only half of its usual allowance, and the state is promising only 15 percent because of the drought, said district spokesman Susan Siravo.

“We’re looking at a major cut in our imported water. We need to plan for 2009 keeping in mind that we’ll only have about a third of the water that we normally would,” she told KCBS reporter Mike Colgan.

Santa Clara County depends on outside sources of water to meet demand. The water district board is set to take up the issue at its March 24 meeting.

The federal allowance to Contra Costa County has also been cut in half, and the water district there faces similar restrictions. That board meets on April 1 to consider imposing mandatory rationing.
