SF School District Encourages Kids to Bike to School

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)  -- The San Francisco School District and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition have teamed up to get kids to bike to school by installing a new bike rack at Francisco Middle School and teaching students basic street safety.

According to Leah Shahum of the Bicycle Coalition, the “bicycle explosion” that has occurred among many San Francisco residents hasn’t trickled down to public schools.

“This is really about working regular exercise into your everyday lifestyle so [that] when kids grow up they are living healthy active lives,” said Shahum.

Another aspect of the program involves teaching kids how to ride their bicycles and carefully share the road with motorists. Instructors teach children on the school playground before they hit the streets and demonstrate basics such as safely crossing intersections and obeying traffic signals.

According to federal statistics, only 30 percent of kids walk or bike to school these days compared to 90 percent in the late 1960s.
