SAN FRANCISCO, (KCBS) -- San Francisco's Western Addition is known by some for its high crime rate. Thanks to the Energy Provisions in Recovery Act, it may soon be known for its switch to green technology.
KCBS' Mark Seelig reports
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sat down with more than a dozen community members Saturday for a roundtable discussion at the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center. The topic: the federal government's commitment to help install solar panels and other green technology at the facility.
Executive Director Howard Smith called the project part financial, part educational. "It'll save us on our bills," said Smith. "The other part of it is connecting with some of these young people and letting them know that it's important to save our environment."
Pelosi said the project will be one of the first from the new administration that promises to turn the country's economy around with the use of environmentally friendly technology. "Unless we go green, we won't have jobs," Pelosi warned.
Longtime resident Carl Williams said it's nice to have Washington, D.C.'s attention. "The Center is the crown jewel. We refer to it as our City Hall."
The panels are expected to be installed in the next few months.
