SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KCBS) -- Cellular phone plans may be costing more than you think, according to a study by the Utility Consumers' Action Network based in San Diego.
You could be paying more than $3 per minute, said Michael Shames, UCAN's executive director.
His group arrived at the figure by comparing the average number of minutes charged in more than 700 San Diego consumers' telecom bills and dividing by the average number of actual minutes used. The findings of the report were representative of cellphone use and bills nationwide, said Shames.

The study also found that the average cellphone customer uses only about a third of "any time minutes" allowed by most wireless plans. The rest are paid for but not used.
