MORAGA, Calif. (KCBS) - This will be a long week for basketball fans on the campus of St. Mary's College in Moraga.
The Gales missed a chance to clinch an automatic bid for the NCAA tournament. That means the team won't know until Sunday if it has qualified for the tournament.
The viewing party at St. Mary's was pretty quiet, as somber students watched their Gaels get crushed by Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference Final.
KCBS' Chris Filippi reports
The campus is waiting, and hoping, for an at-large bid. Students admitted they were disappointed. "That isn't the St. Mary's team we're used to, that's a completely different mind-set that they came out with," one student lamented.
Others said they remain optimistic that the Gaels will still make it into the national tournament. "I think we've proven enough this year, big win with Utah State, San Diego State," offered one student. "Hopefully they play really hard and know how to do their stuff," hoped another.
Still, they acknowledged it will be a long wait until the tournament field is announced.
