SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- A tanker truck carrying 8,600 gallons of gasoline overturned, caught on fire and then exploded early Sunday, April 29th, causing the eastbound I-80 connector to eastbound I-580 to collapse onto the westbound I-80 connector to southbound I-880.
Only the driver of the truck was hurt. He suffered second-degree burns to his hands, arms and face, according to the CHP.
Authorities said the accident may cause the worst disruption for Bay Area commuters since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged a section of the Bay Bridge itself. Motorists are advised to avoid the Bay Bridge maze area or take public transportation. Recommended detours and updates on construction are linked below.
