Free Public Transit Options

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS/CBS5) -- Bay Area Rapid Transit is extending service Monday to try to accommodate commuters between San Francisco and the East Bay. BART is run trains with more cars than normal all day, and is also offering free parking. As parking at many BART stations is in high demand, commuters are urged to carpool or take the bus to stations and to arrive early or leave for work a little later, if possible.
San Francisco's Municipal Transit Authority will deploy additional staff at downtown Muni Metro/BART stations to assist customers in making their transit connections and to also help with return commute information. Commuters are also encouraged to call 311 in San Francisco for information on the best way to use Muni to reach their destinations.
Alameda/Oakland Ferry Service will be doubled from 13 to 26 ferries for both the morning and evening commutes. Schedules will remain the same.
AC Transit buses will be operating on a normal schedule Monday and without additional service since AC Transit does not have many extra buses or drivers available. However, the current bus lines normally have between 40 and 50 percent of their capacity unfilled, and should be able to accommodate additional passengers Monday.
East Bay commuters are encouraged to use the existing Casual Carpool Program in San Francisco, which operates during the p.m. peak. It is located on the east side of Beale Street between Howard and Folsom Streets. Destinations are identified by existing signs. The following areas are served by the program:
-- Hercules
-- Fairfield
-- Vallejo
-- North Berkeley
-- Orinda
-- Lafayette
-- Oakland/Lakeshore
