MORAGA, Calif. (KCBS)  -- What was once an international fad in the 1950s has lived on as a tradition at St. Mary’s College, where LIFE Magazine immortalized an unusual accomplishment: the most people crammed inside a phone booth at one time.

To commemorate the golden anniversary of that photo, and the unusual achievement, stuffed themselves into a phone booth again on Wednesday.

“The glass starts popping out, and people’s bodies start pushing the glass out,” said Anthony Suzio, tasked with keeping the thing upright.

The 1959 photograph capturing the Guinness record became one of LIFE’s 100 greatest pictures.

In an era where simply finding a phone booth could be described as a noteworthy achievement, the students squeezed and exhaled and squeezed some more to tie the record set by their predecessors.
