SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) - More people may be unemployed these days, but that isn’t impacting mass transit ridership on the Peninsula and Silicon Valley.
VTA, Caltrain and Samtrans are all reporting higher numbers.
KCBS' Mike Colgan reports
"We're seeing a 4.6% increase, compared to the same time period last year and that translates to about 100,000 trips a day," said VTA spokeswoman Jenny Loft.
Light rail ridership is also up 4% from a year ago, even though gas prices have come down. "They probably got into a routine, which like everybody, we like the routine. And they figured, hey, this is a good way of going to work or going to school," Loft explained.
"Saves a lot of gas," confirmed one public transit rider. "Parking downtown's a little tough, so it's easier to ride the light rail."
Ridership is up 6% on Samtrans and 11.5% on Caltrain.
