SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS) - San Francisco's Mayor has unveiled his homeless plan for the coming year, including a proposal to house chronic drinks and allow them to continue drinking.
It's part of a plan to get more homeless off the streets in the coming year. This controversial proposal to house public inebriates who have been ineligible for public housing because of their chronic, excessive drinking.
"There are about 219 individuals, literally 219 people that last year the city spent $10.8 million uncompensated dollars treating at San Francisco General Hospital all with one thing in common: chronic inebriation," lamented Newsom.

Now, he wants to set up so-called wet housing where residents can drink as long as they agree to participate in counseling.
"Some wet housing, i.e. housing where you can still drink and you're not going to be removed because you're using and abusing," explained Newsom. "But that you have to agree to participate in programming so that we ultimately can get you to a certain point."
Newsom's new homeless agenda also includes doubling the number of outreach workers, creating at least 270 new housing units for homeless, adding staff at the city's homeless counseling center and providing more job training and employment assistance.
