Here's an update on the no-calorie sweetener called Stevia. It's from the South American shrub called Stevia rebaudiana.
The FDA has granted GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status to rebiana. This means Coca-Cola and Pepsi can use this in their beverages under the brand names Truvia and PureVia. So it's on the way to recognition.
