Local Economy Could Get Big Boost from BART Project

OAKLAND, Calif. (KCBS) - BART is on the fast track to build a "people mover" from the Coliseum station to Oakland International Airport.

Contractors were expected to be updated on the long-awaited, lucrative project Tuesday morning.

The project is expected to boost the region's economy, by some estimates by as much as $1 billion, and provide thousands of jobs.

Officially known as the OAC, the Oakland Airport Connector, the people mover is a 3.2-mile extension from the Coliseum BART station to the airport. "Oakland Airport Connector is the next major, federally funded project up that will benefit from having goals," declared BART General Manager Dorothy Dugger at a recent Board of Directors meeting.

Currently, AirBART carries passengers between the airport and the station. "It will be a lot faster than the current AirBART bus," BART Chief Spokesman Linton Johnson said of OAC. "If we can get this contract going it will use about $70 million in federal stimulus money and employ 13,000 people."

Contractors were invited to a Tuesday morning meeting at MTC headquarters in Oakland, to offer feedback on the $415 million project. A contract must be awarded by the end of December, or the federal stimulus funds will be lost.
