SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) -- For the first time in years, a new telescope is being added to the James Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton.
Scientists at U.C. Santa Cruz and U.C. Berkeley are installing the Automated Planet Finder at Lick, a specifically designed instrument that will search for Earth-like planets orbiting other stars.
That means they need to find planets orbiting stars in the so-called "Goldilocks Zone", where the sun is not too hot and not too cold for life to exist, said Mike Bolte, director of the U.C. Observatories.

The Automated Planet Finder was bought with a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense.
