SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- A successful test run of technology that allows riders to pay using a cell phone has brought the transit agency one step closer to doing away with paper tickets.
Last year, 240 riders participated in a four-month trial of technology that turns allows a cell phone to act like a FasTrak transponder, deducting the fare from an account when the phone is passed in front of a sensor at the fare gate.
“If we start really doing this, there’s a big green technology going on about saving paper,” said Bart Director James Fang. He said the 100 million who ride BART each year use 32 million paper tickets.
KCBS' Holly Quan reports
Fang is expected to announce more details about the trial run on Thursday.
BART is also planning spend $3.4 billion over the next decade to replace 700 cars in its aging fleet. The new cars will have a different design, and the transit agency welcomes public input on how to improve them.
